Tourist Attractions

The Jos Plateau abounds in natural scenic vistas, which present opportunities for tourism and recreation. Among the most famous tourist attraction points in the State are Wase Rock, Shere Hills, Kerang volcanic mountains, Ampang crater lake, Kura, Assop. Kahwang. Sha Burukut and Farin Ruwa Falls, Wase Grazing Reserve, Jos Museum, and Zoological Garden.

Plateau State has a number of sport stadia and golf courses in the major urban centres, especially in Metropolitan Jos. The state's representative - Plateau United Football Club - won the 1999 edition of the Challenge Cup.

Recently, the National Sports Commission chose Plateau State as a high altitude training ground for Nigerian sportsmen and women. The Jos University Open Air Theatre and the ultra modern Jos Cultural Centre offer a wide range of entertainment and recreational opportunities for the international community.


Places to See

The State is a land of beautiful sceneries, rich cultural and historical heritage and excellent weather. It is because of these abundant natural assets that the State Government in 1976 began to conceive of a more serious approach to developing its tourist industry mainly to provide opportunities for visitors to visit the state as well as providing leisure outlets and stimulating environment to the residents.

The Jos Wildlife Park: which is unique for its rare and exotic collection of animals. Picnic areas are provided in the pine forest and the Vongnifwel Hill, 1,345 metres above sea level being the highest point east of Jos. There is also a children's play ground and animal rides.

Museum Complex: Jos museum is Nigeria's first museum and it is situated at the foot of a tree covered granites mountains named Coronation Hill. It has accumulation of Terra Cotta Sculptures of Nok Culture as its most distinguished features.

The Museum Of Nigeria Traditional Architecture (MOTNA): This is erected on the same site with the National Museum Complex. Here are found the collection of traditional architecture.

Jos Zoological Garden: This has a good stock of animals, bird and reptiles, it is situated within Jos metropolis and was established in 1957.

Shere Hills: This is one of Plateau's highest peaks and most rugged, and offers unrivalled opportunities to the mountain climbers and lovers of adventure. It is about 10 kilometres to the East of Jos. The Hills serve as a camping spot to the Citizenship and Leadership Training centre.

Kurra Falls: This resulted from the activities of tin mining in the area. Kurra Falls is used by Nigerian Electricity Supply Company (NESCO) to generate electricity power for a large number of communities in the area.

Panyam Fish Farm: This is located in Mangu local government area about 60 kilometres South-East of Jos. The farm is ideal for sports fishing. It is man-made and its products are sold at subsidized price.

Kerang Volcanic Mountain: These highlands are washed by fetching springs which supply the popular spring water (SWAN) with natural spring water. It is located about 88 kilometres from Jos.

Pandam Game Reserve and Lake: This provides sports fishing activities and relaxation centre for the public.

Rim-River: It is found about 15 kilometres on Jos Akwanga road. It is a very nice place which visitors find interesting.

Wase-Rock: Its remarkable inselberg rising abruptly 250 metres above the plain of Wase town. A notable topographic feature, Wase Rock, an 800-foot- (250-metre-) high hill, rises sharply above the savanna. It is a rock climber's heaven.
