The Office of the Accountant-General has responsibilities for:
- Accounting Policy and Procedure
- Supervision and Inspection of the Accounting Operations of all Ministries and Extra-Ministerial Departments
- Inspection and Monitoring of all Revenue Collectors
- Accounting for the State Government's revenue and expenditure
- Safe custody of all State revenue-earning books including license books, etc.
- Funds management for the State Government
- Control of expenditure of all Ministries and Extra-Ministerial Departments
- Investment of funds not immediately required in short-term deposits
- Maintenance of Advances and Deposits Records.
- Compilation of monthly and annual financial statements of accounts of the Government and of such other accounts that may be required by the Government
- Undertaking of all State Government Banking Transactions.
- Maintenance of accounts with the Crown Agents in London, Statutory Corporations, and Treasury Clearance Accounts with other State Governments
- Payment of retirement benefits (pensions and gratuities) to Federal and State Civil and Military pensioners.
- Participation in the Federation Account Allocation Committee and the State Joint Local Government Revenue Allocation Committee
- Control and supervision of Internal Auditors deployed to Ministries and Extra-Ministerial Departments
- Investigation of losses of funds/stores in Ministries and Extra-Ministerial Departments
- Processing of salaries and payment of overhead costs in respect of non- self-accounting Ministries
- Processing of Audit Queries for the Public Accounts Committee
- Deployment/posting of accounting staff to Ministries, Extra-Ministerial Departments, etc.
